something missing

After reading a raving review in The Hindu we(my husband and i) decided, a bit late as usual to try out the place with i must say sky high expectatons. I must also point out that i have been raised on extremely high quality sea food :) My mother is an extremely good cook and our hearth has not been devoid of fish for more than three days in a row. Lady luck followed me and my mother in law also turned out to be an excellent saefood maker. This has unfortunately given me a tendency towards extremely strong and passionate views on how seafood should be cooked and how it should taste.

Finding it was easy though the lobby and ensuing elevator ride were a little on the smelly side, the decor inside the restaurant was cosy. Reminding me a little bit of the beachside seafood places in Mahabalipuram and Pondicherry. The chef / owner came to explain and take the order and was very, if not a little too helpful. We hoped his foriegn experience and passion came through in the food.  The service was extremely good. The format of the menu was a little strange, three starters, a soup, a main course and dessert all for Rs 400. An individually priced menu would have been great. The selection was ofcourse mainly seafood, which i must say passed the test for taste but there was something missing. My other half i must confess hated it. There was a strain of the same taste running through all the dishes. Putting the chef's signature on a dish is fine but when everyting from the soup to the octopus has the same underlying hint of cumin and red chilli and curry leaves it gets a little boring. Try out the squid packets and curry leaf fish, the only redeeming grace in an otherwise vague and soulless menu.

9/10 for service
5/10 for food
